Description

Henry Clay Tea Caddy 18th C. George 3rd Oval paper-mache Tea Caddy by Henry Clay.  In 1772 Henry Clay, originally from Birmingham, patented a process for treating laminated sheets of paper with linseed oil thus producing waterproof panels. These sheets could be used for building coach door panels, amongst other structural uses, and then for small works such as tea caddies, trays and other boxes. On his trade card Clay described himself as 'Japanner in ordinary to his Majesty and to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales'. He moved to London in 1802, where his company remained active until 1860.
